01 About Kurma

What is Kurma?

Kurma is a crunchy, deep-fried pastry snack with authentic Trinidadian roots, reimagined for the modern snacker. We handcraft it in small batches across a range of sweet and savoury flavours, from Gingermon to Nicely Spiced.

In Caribbean homes, Kurma is a hospitality food, the thing you offer when someone walks through the door. We make ours with that same warmth and care.

Is it sweet or savoury?

Both. Our sweet flavours, such as Gingermon and Ginger Delight, are glazed in gently spiced sugar. Our savoury flavours, such as Nicely Spiced and Simply Salted, take the same delicate pastry and finish it with salt and a warming spice blend instead of sugar.

How crunchy is it, really?

Light and snappy, never hard. A good piece of Kurma should crack cleanly when you bite, never feel chewy.

Is it spicy?

Not chilli hot. The spice in Kurma comes from warming aromatic spices like ginger and cinnamon. Our sweet range is gently spiced, and most children love it.

How should I store it?

Keep your Kurma somewhere cool and dry, and reseal the tub or sachet after opening to keep every bite crunchy. If a piece ever loses its snap, a few minutes in a low oven brings the crunch back. For the best-before date, please check the information printed on your pack.

How do you say Chungums?

It rhymes with 'young ones'. Chuhng-uhmz. It is the affectionate family name behind our Kurma, and the only name we ever considered.
