Welcome to the Journal
A note on why we built the Journal, and what you will find here. Stories, craft and culture from the home of premium Caribbean snacking.
Welcome, and thank you for being here.
Growing up, certain foods carried more than flavour. They carried memory, family and culture. After moving to the UK, it became clear that many of the foods loved across the Caribbean were almost invisible outside their communities. Not because they were not good enough, and not because they were not loved, but simply because nobody had introduced them properly.
Kurma was one of those foods. Chungums began with a simple question: what if a snack enjoyed quietly for generations was given the same care, design and attention as Britain's finest biscuits, chocolates and gourmet treats? That question became this brand.
We started this Journal because a snack with a story this rich deserves more than a label. Here you will find the history behind Kurma and the journey that brought it across an ocean, the craft of how we make it by hand in small batches, guides to our flavours, simple ways to enjoy it, and ideas for sharing it with the people you care about.
We believe remarkable foods can come from anywhere. Some simply need a better introduction. We are not reinventing Caribbean favourites. We are introducing them properly, and we are glad to have you along for it.
Pull up a chair, put the kettle on, and have a read. There is plenty more to come.
